The LA Times (registration required) is reporting that a deal may be near in the writer’s strike. This is great news. If a deal can be reached soon, then there is a hope of all 16 episodes of Season 4 can run, with a mid-season break, this year.
I found this quote a bit troubling:
Writers and studios alike face enormous pressure to cement an accord that would end the 3-month-old strike that has cost thousands of workers their jobs and the Los Angeles economy about $1.6 billion, by one estimate. If the work stoppage continues, it will upset program development for next season and spoil the Academy Awards show Feb. 24.
ABC’s Lost, being a serial drama, relies on a consistent production schedule and episodes that flow from one moment to another. If we only get 8 episodes this season, and next season is delayed (or worse), that could mean nearly a year between seasons. Even with its strong fan base, that would spell trouble for Lost. Can you imagine what it would do to less popular shows, or shows that have already been axed this season (ahem… 24, I am looking at you).
The LA Times says talks will continue throughout the week (unless they break down again). I will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
