Abaddon - New Dharma or Widmore Thug?

Abaddon is a major character this season even though he has barely had five minutes of screen time, and he is giving Ben a run for his money in the bad guy race. He is the major secret this season I believe.

When Abaddon goes to Hurley in the institution and wants to know if “They are still alive”, I don’t think he is talking about the 815 survivors. He has to be talking about his team. somehow, the Oceanic 6 make it off of the island, but his team does not. If his team made it off of the island, then he would know there were survivors. Jack, Kate, Hurley and 3 others somehow kill or detain the freighter four.

This leads me to wonder who Abaddon really is. There are two main theories in my opinion.

  1. He is part of the new Dharma initiative off of the island, and the freighter four are the new Dharma recruits. Dharma wants revenge on Ben, and perhaps Jacob, for the purge. Because he is part of Dharma, he has all of the knowledge of the powers, legends, and secrets of the island which is why he puts together such a rag-tag weirded out team. Abaddon knows how dangerous getting to Ben will be and that the island will most likely protect him.
  2. He is part of another organization, the Widmore group and his desires are much more basic. They want to find the treasure from the Black Rock, or have a need for the massive amounts of Holmium that is probably located on the island. Widmore knows Ben would stop that from happening.
