JinAs I stated in my episode review, I liked episode 4.07, “Ji Yeon,” and it is currently rated highly by you on this blog. However, I never thought that this episode would generate such controversy. There are more people arguing about this episode than any other this season. Here are the two big issues:

Who is the 6th Oceanic survivor?

This episode sucked/didn’t suck.

I will address the second issue first. There are quite a few post on the internet like this one, where people are attacking the episode. The author, Giovanni, of that post states:

Essentially, we’re lead to believe, up until the last five minutes that we’re seeing the birth of Sun’s child, and that we’re following Jin as he does everything he can to play the reformed husband and be there for his wife in a moving gesture of devotion and fatherly pride. Instead, what we realize, is that the whole thing’s an elaborate contrivance that mushes together flashforward with flashback, for absolutely no purpose other than to make us think something wonderful is happening when in truth, Sun’s cries for Jin to be at her side are helpless delusions as he is, presumably, dead.

My response to Giovanni is “EXACTLY!” That is what made the episode work. It worked in the same way “Romeo and Juliet,” “Resevoir Dogs,” or “American History X” worked. People love tragedy. The combination of the flashback / flash forward worked to twist the audience and expose the bitter duality that has become the heart of Lost. Personally, from a writing perspective, “Ji Yeon” was nearly perfect.

The second controversy isn’t nearly as clear cut. There is some confusion as to the Oceanic 6. We can all agree on Jack, Kate, Sayid, Hurley, and Sun. That elusive 6th is difficult to understand. Some argue that it is Aaron, but others contend that the writers had said in a podcast that Aaron wasn’t one of them. Some people think Jin’s moment in Ji Yeon was a flash forward, and Sun thinks he is dead, but he is working for his old boss and Widmore again. I think it is somehow Michael, and Michael is in the coffin. Heck, some people are even arguing for Ben. What a mess!

What do you think? Who gets your vote for the last of the Oceanic 6?

Who is the 6th Oceanic Survivor?

I will vote someone else, and although I am not sure who it is, I will go out on a limb and saw Walt. Micheal sacrifices himself to get Walt home and he is the 6th. ….maybe :)

I can appreciate the argument that Jin’s flashback served no purpose other than as a device for the episode. This is the first flashback that had no real meaning or significance, and I do believe that that weakened the entire episode’s validity.

We already knew that Jin worked hard for Paik. We didn’t gain any insight into Jin’s past or future from his flashback. It was an effective element of surprise, but nothing more.

“This is the first flashback that had no real meaning or significance…”

I will add “except for Jack’s flashback in ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’.” That was also pointless in the grand scheme of things.

Aaron and Ji Yeon were not on the plane. they werent passengers. I go with the technicality of them not being part of the 6. Ji Yeon was conceived on the island no less (and her husband died in the crash?) hmm. more thought needed on that. maybe Jin was one of the 2 Jack mentioned that didnt survive till rescue? Michael seems to obvious to me, but maybe i’m finally getting a handle on Lost.

BTW: Stranger in a strange land… jacks flashback was right in line with the episode. he was a ’stranger…’ in Thailand, trying to fit in, same on the island/otherton. And it explained how the good surgeon came to have such an unusual tatoo. AND that the other chick could read manderin (sp). (am i the only one that thinks the others sheriff looks alot like the older woman from desmond’s visions after the hatch blew up?)

You are all adding some great insight into this discussion!

I agree with Robyn with the “Stranger” flashback, I thought it was appropriate.

Lostlover… I am interested to know who you think the 6th survivor is.

I side with those who listened to the producers’ podcast and intimated that Aaron was not one of the Oceanic 6 because he wasn’t technically on the 815 manifest.

In my opinion, Locke will be the sixth & final member; he is rescued against his wishes, becomes paralyzed again upon return to the real world, kills himself, and is the man in the coffin that Jack visits in the flash forward.

lostfan - I have no idea who the 6th is. I read spoilers a looooong time ago that said it was Jin, but now that doesn’t seem possible - which I think is awesome. I honestly think that anyone could be a candidate, but I do not think it’s Aaron, Ben or Jin.

And as far as the Stranger episode, *IMHO* - I have never, and will never care about Jack’s tatoos. They have nothing to do with anything at all. And if they do end up having significance, I will be disappointed in the show’s writing.

I also don’t care why he was in Thailand unless it has something to do with why he was in Sydney, which it didn’t. Even the on-island stuff was out of sync. We’ve never seen the “sheriff” again, as if that role plays absolutely no significance in the overall story. Juliet’s “marking” was never mentioned again. The episode moved the storyline along by bringing the others back to the barracks, but I feel like it contributed little more than that to the overall story. That’s just my opinion.

I honestly think that anyone could be a candidate, but I do not think it’s Aaron or Ben or anyone NOT on the plane, or Jin because of the date on the tombstone. I also wonder if the Oceanic 6 were called the Oceanic 8 at first, before the other 2 died.

It is JI YEON! When they are in the hospital the nurse or whoever says “Oceanic 6?” and she was referring to the baby! As in “Is this Oceanic 6?” not “Is this (Sun) one of the Oceanic 6?” she meant that Ji Yeon is Oceanic Survivor Number 6 coming into the world!!

It is Ji Yeon. (and what a darling little baby they chose to play her!) Remember Jin saying to the nurse as he leaves the maternity ward, “I’ve only been married 2 months.” There is no way that he would say that if this was a flash-forward. Also, his whole demeanor was so rough/cocky/ old Jin. He died, sorry to say. This episode, truly, was wonderful. I absolutely loved it, and cried at the end.
