Lost Season 4 Ratings Roundup

Ok, so I know ratings aren’t everything.  In fact, some argue that the Nielson Ratings aren’t much at all.  One of our readers, lastcat3, pointed out that the ratings system is old and in need of changes.

lastcat3 and I agree that people are finding new ways to watch television that Nielson Ratings do not account for.  My question is, do the studios care?  Are they so tied to ratings that they will make decisions based on them, or will they realize that the world has evolved?  That being said, ratings mean something. Here are the ratings numbers for the first half of season 4:

“The Beginning of the End” — 16.07 million
“Confirmed Dead” — 15.06 million
“The Economist” — 13.62 million
“Eggtown” — 13.53 million
“The Constant” — 12.9 million
“The Other Woman” — 13.0 million
“Ji Yeon” — 11.87 million
“Meet Kevin Johnson” — 11.28 million

Notice the trend?  I hope the numbers can move up, or at least hold steady.  You and I both know that ratings aren’t the world, but we are not the ones paying the bills.

Even though the show is good, it’s not the same. It’s much faster paced and more about the story than the characters. I went back and watched some season 1 episodes (Raised by Another and All the Best Cowboys…) and they are SO different. Much slower, but almost even more intense. I don’t think that a good season 4 episode lives up to those good ones from season 1.

That being said, I personally think it may all boil down to two words: Locke and Sawyer. They’re not getting enough quality screentime. We get one smart comment from Sawyer each week, and Locke is just really down in his story arc. I think that the mainstream audience loves those two characters in particular. The hardcore audience tends to favor Desmond and Ben. There’s a difference there.
