Did Ben Control The Smoke Monster?

Here’s a picture to jog your memory:

Glyph Door

That’s the glyph covered room Been disappears into undeneath his house.  Something clearly goes on in there.  Some people have theorized that Ben goes into the room to time travel to Tunisia, while others are convinced that the smoke monster is released and controlled from inside that room.

Personally I think the room had to do with the smoke monster.  The door is clearly older than the Others and The Dharma Initiative.  With the new time traveling possibilities, there is really no telling just how old the door is. The question is, is smokey mechanical, and if so are the controls in there?

Now, The Dharma Initiative was concerned about the smoke monster, they built a fence to keep it out.  So, Ben did not control it then.  Ben also kept the fence going, but that could have just been to keep out the rif-raf.

A good way to look at this question is to ask what has smokey done?

  • Smokey has tried to kidnap Locke
  • Smokey killed Eco
  • Smokey has scared the crap out of almost every Lostie
  • Smokey has scanned  Juliet, but left her alone
  • Smokey (may have) appeared as different entities on the island
  • Smokey is rumored to be a security device

Are those things Ben would have done?  I don’t think so.  I think that the smoke monster is clearly powerful, and in the scene where it attacks the freighter thugs, Ben seems a bit worried it will attack the Losties.  I don’t think Ben can control it, he just knows how to release it.

That brings us back to the room.  I think there is an underground island, very ancient and very powerful. The controls to let smokey out, and possibly even control time are hidden in this underground sub city.  Next season, or possibly at the end of this season, we will see this new location become regularly visited.

Any thoughts?  Let me know.
